December, 2007 -- Foothills Kiwanis collects $25,596 in Bell-rInging Donations for Boulder County Salvation Army

Thanks to 347 hours of volunteered bell-ringing time donated from November 23 through December 24, 2007 by Foothills Kiwanis and Boulder Kiwanis members, Kiwanis Key Club members from Monarch High School in Louisville and Peak to Peak Charter School in Lafayette, as well as by other non-Kiwanians, $25,596 in kettle donations were collected to fund the Boulder County Salvation Army's 2008 programs and activities. Bell-ringing locations in Boulder included the Sunrise King Soopers (30th and Arapahoe) and Meadows Safeway (Baseline and Foothills Parkway), and Sam's in Louisville. Thanks to everyone who made kettle contributions to the Salvation Army at these bell-ringing locations!

May 2007 -- Foothills Kiwanis "Starting Line Project" for Memorial Day Bolder Boulder 10K Race Helps Military Families

On May 28, 2007, 38 members and friends of Foothills Kiwanis Club members volunteered to help start the annual Memorial Day Bolder Boulder 10K race for both the citizens' and world-class runner events. For the first time in the race's history, over 50,000 runners/walkers participated in the citizens' race. Proceeds received by Foothills Kiwanis totaling $760 from the Bolder Boulder race organizers for helping start the race went to U.S. military families in need of financial help.

 


April 21 2007 -- Foothills "Taste of Downtown Boulder" Fund-Raiser

The annual Foothills Kiwanis "Taste of Downtown Boulder" event to raise funds for our club's youth-focused programs was held on Saturday, April 21 from 1-4 p.m. under cool cloudy skies. The participants enjoyed food and drink offerings from the following downtown Boulder restaurants - Baked in Boulder Pizza, Belvedere Belgian Chocolate, Bo's Mongolian BBQ, BJ's Pizza, Black Cat, Boulder Café, Camille's Sidewalk Cafe, Dushanbe Teahouse, Falafel King, Himalayas Restaurant,, Leaf, Old Chicago, Paradise Bakery, Powell's Sweet Shop, Rio Grande, and Tea Spot. A total of $5030 was raised from ticket sales for this event that all goes to the Foothills Kiwanis community-service programs to help kids and need families in our community.

 

 

March 31 2007 -- Foothills Kiwanis Cleans Up Burke Field in Boulder for 2007 Softball Season

On March 31, 2007, members of Foothills Kiwanis Club members and other volunteers spent Saturday morning cleaning up and distributing new crushed rock on the Burke playing field in south Boulder. This activity helps kids in our community by giving them a good field to play on the 2007 summer softball season.

October 2006 - April 2007 -- Foothills Kiwanis Attention Homes Project in South Boulder

Mary Schweitzer led the October 2006 through April 2007 Foothills Kiwanis project to rennovate one of the bedrooms in the South Boulder Attention Homes facility. Foothills volunteers included Roger Markham, Terry Hardie, Dennis Hubbard, Joey Buot, Bob Mohling, Kerry Hassler, Jerry Gilland, and others in our club. This facility will be used to house young adults in need of shelter and job training who are no longer living with their parents.

December 2006 -- Foothills Kiwanis Receives Boulder Salvation Army Bell-Ringing Award for Ninth Year in a Row

For the ninth consecutive year, the Foothills Kiwanis Club was awarded the 2006 Boulder County Salvation Army Bell-Ringing Award for collecting the most holiday bell-ringing contributions by a community service organization. The total our club collected from November 24 through December 24 was $17,291.87. The top Foothills Kiwanis bell-ringers were Dave Rogers (32 hours), Bob Mohling (29 hours), Kerry Hassler (25.5 hours), and Jim Peterson (21.5 hours). The top non-Foothills bell-ringing volunteer was Lynn Dyba (17 hours). A total of 227 hours was donated by Foothills and non-Foothills bell-ringers. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to do Salvation Army bell-ringing the past Christmas holiday season!

 

 

 

April 2006 -- "Taste of Downtown Boulder" Foothills Kiwanis Youth Program Fundraiser

On April 22, 2006, the annual Foothills Kiwanis "Taste of Downtown Boulder" fundraising event was held from 1-4 p.m. on a beautiful spring day to raise funds for various Foothills child-focused programs in the Boulder area. Restaurants that provided food and drink samples included - Belvedere Belgian Chocolate, BJ's Pizza, Bombay Bistro, Boulder Café. Boulder Cafe, Camille's Sidewalk Café, Dushanbe Tea House, Mustard's Last Stand, AJI, DISH, Falafel King, Old Chicago, Orchid Pavilion, Rio Grande, Jill's Restaurant, Tea Spot, and Traveler's Juice & Java. The Foothills "Taste" ticket sales provided $4600 of funds for Foothills Kiwanis children-focused community service projects.

 

 

 

February 2006 -- Foothills Kiwanis Receives 2005 Salvation Army Bell-Ringing Award for Eighth Consecutive Year

For the eighth consecutive year, the Foothills Kiwanis Club was awarded the 2005 Boulder County Salvation Army Bell-Ringing Award for collecting the most holiday bell-ringing contributions by Captain Robert Sproule at the Foothills Kiwanis February 13, 2006 club meeting. The total our club collected from November 25 through December 24 was $19432.28, where $11,017.15 came from bell-ringing at Sam's in Louisville. The top Foothills Kiwanis bell-ringers were Dave Rogers (44 hours), Bob Mohling (34.5 hours), Dick Bradfield (26 hours), Kerry Hassler (24.5 hours), and Gerald Mordhorst (20 hours). Top non-Foothills bell-ringers were Lynn Dyba (14 hours), Waverly Persons (10 hours), and Andrea Peterson (10 hours). A total of 352 hours volunteered by Foothills and non-Foothills bell-ringers. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to do Salvation Army bell-ringing during the Christmas holiday season!

June 9, 2005 -- 12th Annual Foothills Kiwanis "Young Children Priority One" Benefit Golf Tourney

On June 9, 2005, the 11th Annual Foothills Kiwanis Young Children Priority One Golf Tournament was held at Lake Valley golf course in north Bolder to raise funds for the Kiwanis Rocky Mountain District's Kiwanis Pediatrics Trauma Institute program at Denver Children's Hospital and for other Foothills Kiwanis youth-related projects. Over 112 golfers participated in the event held on a beautiful Colorado morning. The tournmanet raised over $14,000 to benefit the young people of Boulder and the Rocky Mountain region. Thanks to everyone who made thie tournament a success!.

May 12-29, 2005 -- Foothills Kiwanis/Boulder Kiwanis CCI/PEP Russian Training/Hosting Project

For the second time in two years, the Foothills Kiwanis and Boulder Kiwanis clubs co-sponsored the May 12-29, 2005 telecom/networking training of an 11-member Russian delegation in cooperation with the San Francisco-based Center for Citizen's Initiative/Productivity Enhancement Program (CCI/PEP) organization. CCI/PEP has arranged for more than 4000 Russian business people to visit the U.S. for training in numerous professions since 1996, where the training/home-hosting is coordinated by Kiwanis and Rotary club volunteers. The May 12-29 Foothills Kiwanis/Boulder Kiwanis CCI/PEP project was successfully completed due to many hours of effort provided by Kerry Hassler (overall project manager); Bill Flinchbaugh, Fred McGehan, and Kerry (training coordination); Dottie Imel (home-host coordination); Dale Thompson and Mark Betz (transportation coordination); Paul Bailey (publicity); and Mary Schweitzer (social event planning).

On Thursday, May 12, 2005, the Russian CCI/PEP delegation arrived with group facilitator Elena Poliakova at Denver International Airport to begin their 17-day visit. The delegation received training from May 16-27 from Boulder-area telecom and networking experts at the University of Colorado and various Boulder-area businesses. They also heard talks about business ethics and business management techniques from various consultants. During non-training times, the Russian delegates visited such places as the Air Force Academy and Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, A-Basin (for some late spring skiing), Idaho Springs (for white-water rafting), the State Capitol in Denver, the University of Colorado campus, and the Boulder Pearl Street Mall and other shopping areas. Home-hosts volunteers provided the delegates with opportunities to see the area and enjoy American food.

The May 12-29 Foothills Kiwanis/Boulder Kiwanis CCI/PEP project was a wonderful experience for the Russian delegates and Boulder-area Kiwanians from start to finish! April 23, 2005 "Taste of Downtown Boulder" Fund-Raiser

Under sunny skies on a beautiful spring day, "Taste of Downtown Boulder" ticket-holders enjoyed a variety of tasty food and drink samples offered by 14 restaurants in the Boulder Mall area. The list of restaurants included Antica Roma, Orchid Pavillion, BD's Mongolian BBQ, Rio Grande, Camille's Sidewalk Café, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Tea Spot, Coldstone Creamery, Trattoria Girasole, Dushanbe Teahouse, Traveler's Juice, Mustard's Last Stand, Walnut Brewery, and Old Chicago. The Foothills "Taste" ticket sales provided over $4500 of funds for our Foothills community service projects.

Foothills Kiwanis Wins 2004 Salvation Army Bell-Ringing Award for 7th Consecutive Year

For the seventh consecutive year, the Foothills Kiwanis Club has won the Boulder CountySalvation Army Bell-Ringing Award for collecting the most 2004 Christmas holiday bell-ringing contributions by any Boulder area community-service organization. The 2004 Foothills Kiwanis bell-ringing total collected was $15,283.82, with $7872.27 of that amount coming from bell-ringing at Sam's in Louisville. The total bell-ringing donations collected by Foothills Kiwanis over the past seven years now totals approximately $191,000. The top Foothills Kiwanis bell-ringers this past season were -- Dick Bradfield (35.5 hours), Dave Rogers (34 hours), Bob Mohling (32 hours), Clarence Wood (25 hours), and Kerry Hassler (21.5 hours). Top non-Foothills Kiwanis bell-ringers were Kim and Scott Kanas (12 hours) and Waverly Persons (10 hours). The total hours volunteered by Foothills and non-Foothills bell-ringers was 294 hours (compared to last year's total of 329.5 hours). 2004 Foothills Kiwanis 10th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament Raises over $12,000 for Youth Projects

On June 3, 2004, the Foothills Kiwanis 10th Annual YCPO Golf Tournament was held at Lake Valley golf course in north Bolder to raise funds for the Kiwanis Rocky Mountain District's Kiwanis Pediatrics Trauma Institute program at Denver Children's Hospital and for other Foothills Kiwanis youth-related projects. Thanks to the participation of 112 golfers and donations from various Boulder businesses and individuals, the golf tournament raised over $12,000 for these purposes. The tournament luncheon emcee was former Denver Bronco Reggie Rivers (shown above). Thanks to everyone who made thie tournament a success!.

2004 Thornton High School "Free Book Give-Away" Program

Foothills Kiwanis supports the on-going Thornton High School "Free Book Give-Away" program that provides free novels to students who otherwise would have no personal books at all. This program is coordinated by Thornton High School student counselor Kathy Woods (daughter of Foothills Kiwanis member Clarence Woods). During the 2003-2004 school year, Kathy collected 3601 books with the help of Foothills Kiwanis volunteers. She used $1000 contributed by Foothills Kiwanis and an additional $359 of her own to buy books in additional to book those donated to her. As a result of this program, 40 percent of the 500 Thornton High School students now have their own books.

 

 

Fairview's Brittany Smith Awarded 2004 Foothills Kiwanis Community Service Scholarship

The local area high school student recipient of the 2004 Foothills Kiwanis Community Service Scholarship is Brittany Smith of Fairview High in Boulder. Aside from being an excellent student with a 3.91 GPA, Brittany has done an outstanding job of participating in community service projects during her high school years. Among other things, she has helped with the Whittier School family improvement programs, helping Native Americans on a reservation in South Dakota, and (as a member of the Foothills HS Student Council) volunteered for Bonfils Blood nd and Leukemia Society projects. Brittany will be attending Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and majoring in the study of English-learning disabilities. The $1000 Foothills Kiwanis Community Service Scholarship goes directly towards paying for her tuition.

 

 

 


May 2003 Foothills Kiwanis/Boulder Kiwanis Russian PEP Networking/Telephony Project

Foothills Kiwanis and Boulder Kiwanis volunteers greet the 13-member Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) Russian delegation who arrived at Denver International Airport on May 2. This delegation visited Boulder from May 2 through May 25 to gain professional training in American business practices and telecom technology to help their businesses improve after returning to Russia. Foothills Kiwanis and Boulder Kiwanis arranged the family hosting, training, and social events for the Russian delegates, with hosting support by the Foothills Golden K Club of Boulder, the Louisville/Lafayette Miners Valley Kiwanis Club, and the Brighton Kiwanis Club. PEP visits to the U.S. by Russian businesspeople started in 1996, where more than 4000 Russians participating in this program.
